How to Become a Member of the First Kansas

The First Kansas and KWRC are always seeking persons who have a genuine interest in the Civil War and a sincere willingness to recreate authentically the life of the Kansas soldier or civilian. Here are some tips for how to join us:

Meet the members

The first step is to meet the members of the 1st. Come see us at living history events and decide whether you like this hobby. Reenacting can be a physically strenuous hobby. It is not for everyone.

Express your interest

Next, if you have decided you would like to try us out, get in touch with us and let us know you are interested. We can send you a newsletter and invite you to observe a future event.

Start acquiring equipment

We do not expect each new member to outlay money to buy all the necessary equipment at once. Normally our new members take the first season to get their basic equipment together. We have a limited number of uniforms and equipment to loan, subject to Company Procedure, to allow new members to participate until they acquire a basic uniform and the minimum equipment necessary to present a good infantryman impression. See a list of equipment you will need to find out what that entails.

Attend introductory events

These first few events will initiate you to the hobby. You will get a good idea what this hobby is all about and if your decision to get into this hobby was correct. You will experience not only the excitement of simulated combat, but the comeraderie around the campfire that binds our members together with friendships that have lasted for many years.

Become a full member

Once you have attended some of our events, found that you too share our excitement for reenacting, obtained your basic uniform and equipment, and paid your yearly dues, you will become a full member of the First Kansas.

The First Kansas was assigned to the 16th Corps, 17th Corps and ended the war with the 19th Corps.
